Medicare is a Federally sponsored health care program that is designed to offer health services to people who are 65 years of age or older, along with certain people with disabilities. (Approximately 40 million Americans on Medicare)

Who is eligible for Medicare?

  • Those who are 65 years of age or older
  • People with certain disabilities
  • Eligible for social security
  • Eligible for railroad retirement benefits

Medicare is made up of 2 parts, Medicare Part A & Medicare Part B.

Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care / skilled nursing facility care, certain facets of general health care and hospice care.

Part B covers doctors' services, outpatient hospital services & other health care related services not necessarily covered by Part A, such as home healthcare.

Although not generally recognized as highly as Medicare Parts A & B, there is a Medicare Part C that was established by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.

Part C is not a part of the original Medicare Plan, and is sometimes referred to as the Medicare + Choice Plan, containing managed care plans similar to standard HMO's and private plans similar to indemnities.

Recent Changes: Medicare Obesity Coverage - After 40 years of stating that obesity was a personal problem and not an illness, Medicare has changed its position on the matter, now defining obesity as a medical problem that can be covered under the Medicare program. Under the new definition, surgeries such as those designed to shrink the stomach along with in-hospital diet/excercise programs could be covered under Medicare. Of the 40(+) million Americans on Medicare, approximately 37% are overweight and approximately 18% are obese. *
